If so, Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) is seeking a Full-Time Custodian to join our amazing non-profit Team!


The ideal candidate will have a strong custodial and janitorial background with basic maintenance and landscaping skills; be highly motivated and self-starting; and be able to work in a dynamic, constantly changing environment.


For over 30 years, AFV has been helping animals in need, and we now support our local communities of Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar, Menifee and parts of Riverside County. We provide a safe haven for all animals and provide them quality and affordable care.


Summary of Duties:

Under general supervision of the Director of Clinic Operations (DCO), this position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and general upkeep of the facility and grounds per established policies and procedures.

Essential Functions: 

People Care:

  • Provides professional service to clients, visitors and volunteers while promoting and educating the public on the organization’s mission, services, programs and activities
  • Works well with team across the organization
  • Directs visitors and clients to the appropriate areas of the facility

Record Keeping:

  • Completes daily, weekly, monthly checklists as indicated; could change according to business needs
  • Maintains supply inventory and communicates with DCO when supplies are needed

Facility Care:

  • Fill dog water bowls daily at beginning of shift
  • Cleaning up pet waste
  • Cleaning, sanitizing and maintaining restrooms
  • Dusting / sanitizing rooms, including fixtures and furniture
  • Vacuum, mop floors and vacuum and clean rugs, mats
  • Laundry, including folding and putting away laundry items
  • Empty and wash garbage bins
  • Recycling procedures
  • Cleaning, sterilizing and creating surgical instrument packs
  • Cleaning, sterilizing and preparing animal cages
  • Ensures work stations are kept clean and in working order
  • Grounds keeping as needed, including but not limited to raking, trimming / cutting, weeding, basic plant / foliage care, sweeping walkways
  • Keep all customer and employee areas clean at all times
  • Report facility damage, non-functioning equipment, and wear and tear to DCO
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs as needed
  • Adheres to organizational guidelines and policies for cleaning, disinfection and disease control

Qualifications and Certifications and/or Education

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • Kennel/animal/janitorial/custodial experience preferred
  • Proactive, positive, ‘recycle, reuse and repurpose’ attitude
  • Valid California “C” driver’s license with good driving record
  • Strong Customer Service
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and know at anytime you may need to clean an area due to unexpected animal-related accidents and clean surgical areas
  • Basic Mathematical Skills

Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform moderate to heavy physical work both outdoor and indoor in all weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous conditions; use varied hand and power tools; drive a motor vehicle and/or heavy construction equipment; lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment and good body mechanics; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio.  Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled off-hours and emergency overtime as required.  Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and face mask as required.

Must be patient and tolerant of loud environments (barking), humidity, dog waste, odor and hair.  Exposure to zoonotic diseases.  Subject to possibility for animal bites and scratches.
