If so, Animal Friends of the Valleys (AFV) is looking for an exceptional rock star Animal Care Specialist to join our amazing non-profit organization!

The ideal candidate has at least 6 months of previous professional animal care experience, is willing to clean and maintain kennels and a shelter facility, is a highly-motivated self-starter and is seeking to increase their level of knowledge to handle increased responsibility over time.

For over 30 years, AFV has been helping animals in need, and we now support our local communities of Canyon Lake, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar, Menifee and parts of Riverside County. We provide a safe haven for all animals and provide them quality and affordable care.

Summary of Duties:

Under general supervision of the Director of Animal Care/Animal Care Coordinator, performs a variety of duties involving the feeding, care and treatment of all animals at AFV; receives and cares for impounded animals; medicates sick and injured animals; when necessary, performs humane euthanasia of animals (if certified); and performs related duties as assigned. An Animal Care staff cleans and maintains animal holding areas and kennels at the AFV facility to provide a clean and safe environment for impounded animals, staff and the public. Will also interact with the public during out processing of adopted or recovered animals, informing them of necessary care information. Work requires contact with sick, injured, unruly and/or vicious animals and euthanasia.

Essential Functions:

· Performs intake duties for animals brought to shelter.

· Identifies common animal diseases.

· Provides care for animals in the shelter including feeding, bathing and observing animal behavior; monitors conditions of animals and implements precautionary measures in order to prevent disease transmission or to prevent animal fights or fractious behavior.

· Lifts and crawls into cages to clean and disinfect them; cleans shelter grounds and facilities of fecal matter, blood and other unsanitary and/or hazardous material.

· Provides assistance to members of the public wishing to claim their pets and to customers wishing to adopt an animal; escorts customers through the shelter; responds to questions regarding adoption procedures and fees; assist customers with pet adoption selections.

· Euthanizes animals (if certified); verifies animal identification and restrains, tranquilizes and humanely injects euthanasia solution; disposes of remains according to policy and regulations.

· Ensure that animals in all areas have food, water, and needed supplies.

· Assist with providing enrichment to animals.

Other Duties:

· Euthanizes animals safely when required. Must be certified and approved by Executive Director prior.

· Answers inquiries from the public pertaining to the animal shelter.

· Provides excellent customer service.

· Replenishes supplies in animal rooms; reports when supplies are low to the Director of Animal Care/Animal Care Coordinator.

· Cleans all animal and work areas including dog courtyards, kitchen and hallways.

· Washes dishes, litter pans, and crates.

· Assists with garbage removal.

· Assists with grooming as needed.

· Assis in Health Check as needed.

· Washes and dry laundry including towels, sheets, blankets, etc.

· Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the AFV policies.

· Observes all safety rules and regulations for self and others.

· Maintains good housekeeping.

Qualifications and Certifications and/or Education

· Valid Class “C” driver’s license

· Some positions may be required to obtain State of California euthanasia certification within six months of assignment to the duty.

· Previous experience in handling of domesticated animals as a Veterinarian assistant, kennel attendant, 4-H participant, animal trainer or experience caring for numbers of domesticated animals in a private setting is preferred.

In Addition to Qualifications and Certifications and/or Education:

Knowledge of:

· Methods, practices and procedures in the restraint, handling, care and feeding of animals, including the handling of and/or quarantine of unruly or vicious animals.

· Animal breeds, behaviors and proper animal handling techniques.

· Safe and humane methods of animal euthanasia.

· Infectious or contagious animal diseases and their symptoms.

· Safe operation of cleaning equipment and chemicals used to sanitize the kennels and animal holding area.

· Microchip implantation and scanning techniques. Must be approved by the Director of Animal Care

· Processes and techniques for quality customer service.

Ability to:

· Safely, confidently and humanely handle and care for animals of all sizes and temperaments.

· Learn and follow appropriate procedures for administering medications and vaccinations.

· Courteously and tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from customers at the shelter and the public.

· Euthanize animals (if certified).

· Exercise patience and tact when working with difficult, emotional or angry people

· Handle animals of various temperaments including aggressive animals.

· Observe, assess and understand animal behavior.

· Effectively utilize leashes, control sticks, animal traps, cat tongs and other animal handling equipment.

· Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· Communicate effectively with the public and provide effective customer service.

· Apply sound judgment in a variety of situations in accordance with established policies and procedures.

· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, the public and other encountered in the course of work.

Working Conditions:

Environmental Conditions:

· Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, rabies, or rude/irate customers. The employee frequently works in extreme outside weather conditions and on slippery and uneven surfaces. The employee is often exposed to dangerous, injured or diseased animals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne articles, toxic or caustic chemicals, zoonotic and other communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud within confined areas.

Position is regularly required to use or be able to handle:

· Crouch

· Lift items up to 50lbs unassisted

· Lift items up to 75lbs with assistance.

· Occasionally up to 100lbs with assistance.

· May be exposed to animal odors or airborne particles.

· Exposure to hazardous materials in accordance to Prop 65

· May be subject to animal bites and scratches.

· Will be subject to strong and unpleasant animal orders.

Work Attire:

· In accordance with AFV dress code policy.

· Animal Care staff is to wear company issued scrubs and non-slip, closed shoes.

Work Assignment:

· Subject to irregular work shifts including evening, weekend and holiday shift assignments.

Direct Reports: This is a non-supervisory role.
